Hi everyone,
We wanted to give you an update on our efforts to support Oculus’ recent 0.6.0 SDK update. Oculus 0.6.0 represents some major changes in the Oculus SDK, including (among other things) no support for OSX. A number of active developers building with Leap Motion for VR and non-VR projects actively use Core Assets, and an update of the assets to include the Oculus 0.6.0 SDK would break their cross-platform projects.
Unity is also in the final stages of prepping their Unity 5.1.0 update, currently in the release candidate phase of development and testing. Unity 5.1.0 removes the concept of an Oculus plugin, replacing it with built-in support, and a radically different structure for how VR cameras are handled. Many of the features in our Core Assets are dependent on the old Oculus plugin structure, and we’re working with Unity to resolve the issues that have arisen due to their updated integration.
Given those factors, we’re targeting our next release of our Unity Core Assets for once Oculus 0.6.0 and Unity 5.1.0 have stabilized, and we’re able to offer a reliably structured set of features in Core Assets.
In the meantime, we’ve tested applications using the current version of Core Assets built with the Oculus 0.5.0 SDK and Unity 5.0.1 under the Oculus 0.6.0 runtime, and have seen no issues. That said, if your current projects have a deep requirement on our Core Assets and Oculus 0.6.0 and are unable to manually update the Oculus SDK version, let us know and we’ll be happy to see how we can help.
Working with emerging technology can be challenging at times, especially while all of us in the community are still developing our tools and learning how best to work together. Thanks for coming along for the ride; we’re excited about all the new updates and the great experiences being made possible.
