Your comments are very interesting and lead to a bunch of flow on questions. I am also attempting to work with the Leap Motion through glass, which explains the context for the questions below.
You mention pulsed and synchronized LEDs. If the Leap LEDs were "magically" extended outside of the leap motion case and distributed in a line above a glass surface (with the Leap say 10cm below the glass) would the Leap still work as expected? Putting the question in a another way, does the leap simply require pulsed/synchronized light sources or does the location and relative placement to the cameras play an important role?
I am totally willing to accidentally trash a few Leap Motion devices and get someone suitably experienced to "do some fairly heavy electrical re-work". Can you provide any instructional assistance to help in this blasphemy ?
Apart from heavy hitters like ASUS and HP, is there a path for small players to licence the Leap technology and embed it in more niche products beyond laptops?
