The software will sometimes get it wrong, but it shouldn't always get it wrong. Make sure you haven't enabled HMD mode when using the device on the desktop, or alternately haven't enabled HMD mode when using the device mounted on an HMD. Another possibility is that you have turned off the auto-orientation feature and are using the device with your hands entering the field of view from the wrong side. With auto-orientation turned off, your hands should enter from the long side of the device that has the green LED on it. Finally, the device only works when it is either on a table pointing up or mounted on an HMD. No other orientations are supported.
