I posted around the time of the 1.2 update, and until recently, hadn't experienced anymore issues with my Leap. I would occasionally need to do something minor, like restart the Leap Service or temporarily disconnect the device, but nothing beyond my control that wasn't easily remedied.
Somewhere within the last six months or so, I began noticing that the device would feel hotter than I remembered it ever being. It was noticeable. Where I live, dealing with dust is something we're conditioned to managing, so unplugging the device to clear the surface to ensure optimal tracking conditions was apart of my daily routine. It was during this activity that I would notice the temperature of the Leap. Never quite hot enough to make me stop using it, but still memorable.
Within the past month, the situation has taken a turn for the worse. I started seeing these errors and diagnostic tools that would pop-up that I'd never seen before. One would tell me to try a different port, and after clicking a button to "Retry", the other was this sort of gauge with an arrow pointing to RED, YELLOW, or GREEN that apparently tested the performance of the currently connected port (though the gauge never really changed, it would stay stuck in RED, and then all of a sudden tell me everything was "All good!").
That went on for a couple of weeks, and then this game of reportedly crippled ports and retesting failed to bring the device back online. Throughout this period, I would try different ports, but it never seemed to make a difference. It felt a lot like the software was reporting false positives; however, the device was VERY hot at this point.
When this little game failed to bring the device back online, I figured the device was dead and that I'd have to buy a new one, but before I trashed it, I tried a new USB cable. Miraculously, the device sprang back to life and all was well again. Unfortunately, it only worked for about an hour before I was seeing the same pop-ups telling me to try a different port. I felt the device, and it was hotter than I've ever felt it before. I've had my cell phone heat up when it struggles to find service, but the Leap was hotter than any cell phone I've ever held. It was hot enough that I had to set it down immediately. It was that uncomfortable to hold.
So I figure, that's it for this device, but I thought I should come on here first and see if there's a way to roll-back the software as a final troubleshooting measure. I have no idea when or why the software ever updated past 1.2 (the version I had issues with before), and the fact that the software is updating in the background without my knowledge kind of pisses me off (especially if it was one of these updates that caused my problem and may have ruined my device).
I initially ordered the Leap to act as an interface device with Windows 8, but the only use I ever found for it was controlling Spotify with HandWave. I will be getting into 3D modeling soon, so it's a frustrating that its dying when it is. I feel like I barely got anything out of it.
