From what I'm hearing from engineering, it's unlikely a solution will be arrived upon.
Do you (Leap company) have some talk with Unity3D people? Now Unity free do support Oculus Rift as an exception, Unity free might able to support Leap also, as one more exception.
In my guess, Unity want to attract VR developers for both free and pro version. So Unity added support for Oculus on Unity free. Almost the same thing may happen with Leap Motion.
